Attendance, Absences & Tardies

  • Absences, Attendance, Tardies & Make-up Work

Parents should call our 24-hour absence line at 742-1050 when their child will not be attending school or will be arriving late.  Parents who do not call in by 9 a.m. will receive a call and an email via ASD's automated absence system.

    Pre-Planned Absences

ASD requires parents to fill out a Pre-Approved Absence Request at least one week in advance of taking their child out of school for a pre-planned absence.  Principal Brenda Edwards will review each request and a copy will be returned to you.  Please note that the make-up policy below. Make-up work may be given upon the return from absence, not before. Be sure to talk to your child's teacher/s well before the pre-planned absence. Sick day make-up work may be picked up in the office after 2:30 p.m. on the day of the absence when the office or teacher has been notified ahead of time.

For additional information about ASD’s attendance policy please visit ASD’s website.

Make-up work for students with Excused Absences

One day of make-up privilege will be granted for each day of absence, regardless of the length of the absence. Teachers are expected to provide make-up work that is as meaningful as possible; however, it is recognized that make-up work may not provide the same kind and quality of instruction as the student would have received in class. The actual work assigned for grading is at the discretion of the teacher.

Full credit is awarded as long as the work is completed within the allotted time, which is the school day following the make-up period.  All make-up work is due on the final day of the make-up period (e.g., if a student is absent for three school days, all make-up work must be completed and turned in on the fourth day after returning to school).

If a test is missed, arrangements for making up the test will be made between the teacher and student after the make-up work for the absence has been completed. Once arrangements are made with the student to make up the test, it is the student's responsibility to show up for the test at the assigned date and time. If the student does not show up for the test at the assigned date and time, he/she/they will lose the privilege to make up the test unless there are extenuating circumstances beyond the control of the student. If a state-required assessment is missed and the assessment has a make-up date(s), the student will make up the test according to the individual school's make-up schedule. If the student is absent during the make-up date(s), the student will not have the opportunity to take the assessment based on state regulations.

    Students with Unexcused Absences

Students who intentionally skip class will not be granted the privilege to make up work or receive credit for work due on the day of the unexcused absences.  Students who intentionally skip class on a state-required testing day will make up the test based on the individual school's make-up schedule when make-up testing is allowed.

When a student has an unexcused absence that is beyond the control of the student (e.g., parent/guardian requires a student to stay home to take care of younger sibling, parent/guardian takes a student on family vacation that has not been approved as an excused absence), the principal will have the discretion to allow for make-up work.  If make-up work is denied, the student or parent/guardian may have that decision reviewed at the Instructional Division by making a request to the appropriate Division within two (2) school days. In situations where the principal has granted make-up privileges, the guidelines for an excused absence apply.

    Early Pick-Up

The end of the day is a very busy time. Teachers are giving last-minute instructions as well as getting 20 or more children dressed to go outside. For this reason, unless it is an emergency, we will not call the classroom after 2:15 p.m.  If you do plan to pick up your child early, please do so before this time. Parents/guardians must come to the office to sign their child out of school. We will call the student(s) from their class at that time, not before you arrive.

    Tardies

School begins at 8:00 a.m. Tues-Fri and 9:00 a.m. on Mondays.  Tardies disrupt instruction for the student and the rest of the class.  Students who are not in their classroom ready to learn at the beginning of the school day are considered tardy. Students arriving 10 minutes after the beginning of the day will need to sign in at the office.
